With 21 fellow kayak fishing fanatics, I jumped aboard the Islander mothership this weekend for the 100 mile ride to the Cortes Bank. Although the bank is a legendary fishing and diving spot, this trip was a first for kayakers.
In lake-like conditions, frantic bonito up to 12 lbs and hard-charging ‘tails pulled kayakers in every which way across the shallows. After three years of trying to get out there, a resounding success.
As you know, a monster lurks here, the infamous Bishop Rock big-wave break. It slumbered under the warm sun on our arrival day, but stirred on Saturday. With Wilderness Systems Kayak Fishing Manager Mark Pierpont, I paddled over for a closer look, thus the photos. There was another opportunity, much better, but I was too preoccupied with paddling for my life. Just imagine the one with Pierpont in it sculpted a third again as high, and pitching in at 70 degrees. The final shot shows what the very next set looked like.
