Couldn't sleep Friday night though tournament Saturday is a week away. Only fished So. Bay one time a year ago with Rotten. Played the night like it was tournament time....up at 4:30 on the road by 5:30 praying the yak didn't fly off the SUV going over the bridge.
Arrived at the launch ramp just before 6am. Hadn't been there 5 minutes when a good lookin gal pulls up in a pickup with a Yak sticking out the back. Asked her if she fished here often...no it wasn't a line :)...said she didn't but was here to prefish for a Yak tournament...my situation exactly...could I tag along? She agreed and went over to the launch to ready her yak.
Next up pulls a guy named Bob with a boat...You fish here often...bout a 100 times a year...Bob could you be my new best friend I ask? Know any hot spots? Helped Bob get the tarp off his boat and he has me climb aboard to show me his Navionix maps of So. Bay. Definitely shows some star clusters of frequently visited spots on the screen...Bob, it turns out, is a bone fisherman who uses a flyrod. Super guy who was glad to share.
Nancy, I believe, is a friend to many on this board and I really appreciate being able to tag along and share experiences. We caught fish after fish. Got to get me a fish finder. Really helped as she called off depth and temp.
She really impressed me in holding her Hobie dead still in the Sweetwater channel when the wind kicked up to white caps. She was determined to get another Spottie on the pilings. I, on the other hand would have sailed down the channel to 805 in my Cobra had I not gotten out of there.
Gulp/swimbaits/spinners...they all worked. Can't believe how shallow some spots were in the lower bay.
Later Nancy headed back to launch ramp and I headed west out into the bay. Slowly the day was winding down, dark soon, really wanted to paddle further west but decided to drift east with the wind, back toward the ramp.
At the mouth of the harbor gave a wide berth to a family fishing from the rocks...that was me for years while saving for the yak. Appreciate my ride though my butt is killing me.
Docked at 5 pm...10.5 hours on the water...not enough time. People who don't love fishing would never understand.
Ache all over as I load the yak and climb into the SUV. Can't wait to get home, unload, take a hot shower and grab a beer and the remote to watch the 2nd day of the Bassmaster's Classic. Playing Fantasy Fishing on ESPN and want to see how my team fished.
All in all it was a great day...Much to be thankful for...new friends, plenty of fish...San Diego in February..we are blessed.
Hope to see you all at the Yak tournament this weekend. I've got a bright green F n D. Hope we all have a great time.
