There is a well-known vulnerability in the pager application and the fixes created thus far are very buggy (I am subscribed to any good news on this from the vbulletin boards). I encourage you to use an IM app such as one provided by Google or Yahoo. Also, make sure the box in your options for 'pop-up on new private message' is checked so you don't have to refresh to get message alerts.
