View Full Version : Bob Timmins Report

Over time I have shared aquatic adventures with some of you and told tales of my uncle, Bob Timmins, the legendary addiction recovery specialist.

His health had been real bad the last few years. Pronounced dead once. Plenty of ICU stays and death vigils. Well, we knew the vigil that started last Monday was to be the last. Bob chose his bedroom floor with some blankets and pillows for his dying spot. The flow of people in and out of his Marina Del Rey condo was constant, but the core was a group of 10, primarily music guys, with some actor dudes, then his nephew, me.

We made sure he was comfortable, entertained, and left alone. He went out with supplemental oxygen and hourly morphine in his own home with loved ones by the dozen. He was an ex-con Hell's Angel addicted to heroin at one time. Razor's edge life early. Wednesday, right around "last call", Bob exhaled one final time on this plane.

With two-day notice, over 800 attended the serene and inspiring 2-hr memorial today at the Self Realization temple in Pacific Palisades. I had wife and daughter in tow. 16-mo old daughter Isabel met lots of cool people and entertained them with some dancing in the courtyard.

You know I usually bring the pic action but this wasn't the place. There was a pro there though who got some. Will try to cop some. I'll put some random Bob pics below.

Anyhow, if you are impressed with celebrities, like rock stars, athletes, and film folk, you'd be floored by that report (though I must say it was interesting how abuzz the crowd was later, talking about how Ozzy snuck in the back for a little bit then left [his son Jack was saved by Bob] - Ozzy carries weight. :o But this is really about why they were all there, alongside more normal folk: successful men who were once homeless burglars addicted to crack. They were there to show respect to a man shaped by Spirit to heal.

To remind us all that "the best you can be is human." :cowboy:

He recently bragged to me about a convent he converted into a recovery facility for women with children living on the streets addicted to drugs.

I could do on forever on this topic................................

The obit tells a decent report (took a half page in the Times today). The radio interview is weird, because Bob can't explain it either. Well, he doesn't have to now. :)

Love you Bobby.

Man, sorry to hear about that. The good thing is that he played a significant part in a ton of people's lives...it's not how long you live your life, but how you live it while you're here. Talk about a guy who ran from one side (the dark) to the other - he's seen it all.

Hell, you're uncle's so bad ass even my wife knows about him. I brought up a friend's name the other day (different Bri(y)an) and she said, 'is that your fishing buddy with the rock star uncle?' I had pointed him out one time when he popped up in a VH1 interview or something. The shocking part was that she knew your name, which still worries me, but I digress.

I'm sure it means everything to him to have so many people who cared about him deeply, including yourself. He'll always be smiling about that.

A true measure of a man is not what he does while he is on this planet but what continues and lives after he has moved on, Godspeed!

Sorry for your loss bro... Amazing tale of an amazing man, if we all strived to leave this type of impact on society we would surely be in a better place. May he RIP and may his spirit live on....

Sorry for your loss... I worked in recovery services for 5 yrs... I couldn't do it any longer, it takes a special, passionate individual, like your uncle to really help people, and make change.

Damn it Bryan! I didn't know this until just now. (a little behind on my button pushing)
That's a great man that can take all that negativity and bad direction and turn it around and help so many. I would've liked to have met him.
Sorry for your loss. And the world's. Too few like that to go around.

The echoes of Bob's presence on this plane have been buzzing through my mind for twenty years. His light will be missed. And it is strange to think in an indirect way, he put me tripping on stage with Nirvana. Strange that, but not strange his positive impact on so many people. I wish I could have been in California for the service. I will see you soon. Much to talk about. Fish.

Me and My Friends

Me and my, me and my, me and my,
Me and my, me and my friends

Like two sweet peas
In an even sweeter pod
Thats my friend
And my friends named bob
Like the devil knows Hell
I know Bob well
Well enough to tell you
bout his 67 smells
Well enough to tell you
He's a hell-a-swell fellow
Well enough to tell you
That we know each other better
Than we know our selves
Like freaks of a feather
We rock together
I know Bob well
But I think he knows me better

Hey Bro, just got confirmation that Rolling Stone will have an obituary on him in next issue.

Subtly encouraging that Rolling Stone is on their game enough to have this awareness - Bob probably knew some of the key players... cool - I will monitor ether waves for the appropriate issue.

Cell phone conversation. Sometime this weekend. I want to tell you about the birds and the squirrels that have been skittering in the bushes outside my balcony. Chaka.
