Overcast and breezy fishing Pt. Loma kelp jungles with DJ Duane this morning. Got into a bite right away, then went looking amongst the thousands of diving birds for some steadier action on better fish. After a little while turning stones, we saw it, the worm. Was it an angry pod of redfish? Firecracker yellows? No, these racing wakes and splashes were maniacal calicos, some pushing 6 if not 7, just thugs ravaging baitfish and cruising in gangs. For about an hour the action was nuts. We roped to some kelp at the "pond". Wait for turbulence or aerials, then cast on it. Swimbaits became the money trick though the Trix and Reebs jigs in Sour Diesel and Old Spice worked at times in the trees. Splashing, racing dorsals, backflips, dolphin leaps...it was sick. These bass were making our month! Between the two of us we had a balanced score of well over 40 bass; nothing massive, but many in the 3- zone. Duane tapped the variety pack, adding 2 decent sandies and a chunk treefish to the mix. I got to use my new Promar Dan Hernandez net. Sweet! So gentle on the fish with a long, sturdy bling handle. I also tried a topshot of new (to me) Blackwater fluoro leader. I like! We ran into fishtricks and his always suspicious companions. I hope they stomped the fish as well. Lots of boats out for the rockfish opener. We enjoyed the calico opener! Spawn colors and and aggressive surface explosivity. Ahhhh, soaking in it. Hey, you can even see fishtricks and crew in the background of this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRM2pF_0bGY), in which Duane demonstrates how to catch a calico bass.
This was a day I won't forget. The display of calico aggression was just epic. Here are some highlights.
