Seasons Sportfishing Yellow Fin Tuna *Report* 9/8/08:
FISH COUNT: 15 Yellow Fin Tuna
We fished with a new back drop yesterday out of Dana Point with a full day charter. Baited up and was off at 3 am with some KILLER bait to say the least! Pointed the boat for the 209 area to begin our day at grey light. Worked the mammals for a good part of 2 hours before we got the first 2 fish hooked.
We had some down time and a lot of running before the fish gods set us up in the right place at the right time.... We had a full on WFO Yellow Fin Tuna bite that one can only dream of....! Fish were eating paint off the bottom of the sled.
We slid up on the out side of a bird school and i had the guys slow troll baits on the way in and it was game on with 2 hook ups! Then 3 scoops went into the corner and made for a 1 1/2 stop...
If you like the #'s please check on FISHDOPE for our report.
Thanks again David and Mike for fishing hard and sticking it out , its to bad the other 2 guys canceled on ya last min... I am sure they are kicking themselves ......

Nice report. Way to get in 'em!
Did Mr. duane, or anyone else, use a popper or a prop-bait to get any?
Here's hoping you're making some good $$$$$$$$$$$$$ this summer.

unfortunately no, i didnt bust it out cuz the rod i was gonna throw it with was stowed (i was working) and the deck was already a madhouse... pretty much pin one on whatever rod is available, toss it out, watch it get jamauled, count to 3, put the reel in gear and kill kill kill.
im dying to get on one of those stops when im not working.... i have like 10 different jigs/baits i would really like to throw into a mess like that.

Mmm Hmmmmm, ain't that the truth. The above sounds like THE perfect time to throw one.
I haven't forgot about you. So far this month I've been taking a few with me who have never done it or don't get the chance to go very much so they can experiance the madness. There are a few dates later in the month and in October that will be open.
Here's the 11th jig/bait for you to get and try when you get around to it:
wooden bodied prop-baits. Poppers and/or Super Spooks are fun but the vicious strikes delivered to a ripped prop-bait are awe inspiring! Untill you see it you just can't relate.
Check out:
Ozark Mtn Peacock Woodchopper prop-baits
8 inch long wooden body, counter rotating fore and aft props (or counter rotated rear props), rigged with beefy connectors and hooks. Just right for tuna fishing. Really puts up a commotion that the tunners just can't resist when they're in that mood.
You must make sure you are getting the "Peacock" grade bait as the others aren't beefy enough for tuna fishing.
One of these days you should ask Gomes about his "Curt Gowdy" rod. I never saw a man so dispondant as when it went over the side.............

well noted and will be looking for one or two of those. i can imagine that thing would just get annihilated on a stop like mondays. i was pop-eyeing ones & twos and watching them get knocked clear outta the water by 2-3 tuna at a time. same shit basically...
and id be stoked to get out there with ya before this season comes to an end.... just let me know and make sure there's enough beer
thanks doug!

I hoped that worked. Gives you an idea of what to expect.
I like the bigger 6 3/4 inch to 8 inch Wood Choppers for tuna fishing. The baits with the double aft props kick up more fuss when ripped than the ones with props fore and aft.
The ones I have I got years ago while living in Florida to fish the canals for Peacocks. I just tried one out on tuna a few years ago, not really thinking they would get bit, just to see what would happen. They work. I can't find any pictures of the ones I have on the 'net.
